Over the last 3.5 months, Katie Kozlowski lost more than 20 pounds and gained lean muscle. To do so, she performs a combination of weight lifting and cardio five times a week and eats high-protein, low-fat meals based on the Whole30 diet. She's able to track what she eats with her FitBit and sticks to about 1,500 calories per day.

Favorite weight-loss feature:Katie says the heart-rate feature on this tracker is a game changer for her. Previously, she was working with a personal trainer who designed cardio workout plans for her based on an inaccurate resting heart rate. Katie's resting rate was originally measured at 69 BPM, which could have been accurate at the time it was taken because she was nervous. But her actual resting rate is about 54 to 57 BPM, according to her fitness tracker. "I felt like I was over-working during my cardio and it was challenging to keep it up," she says. "With my tracker, I can see my heart rate and how many calories I'm burning, which means I get an accurate measurement each day, and that helps me lose weight overall."

Freshman 15?Pfft. Jennifer Li says she actually lost a few pounds in college. But she started to gain weight after graduation when she was working an office job in the finance industry. Over the course of three years, she put on 18 pounds. "I was actually eating healthier than I was in college and my workout routine was almost exactly the same, so I had to figure out the variable that was causing me to gain weight," Jennifer says. While earning her bachelor's and master's degrees, she didn't have a car and walked around campus. She estimates that she walked at least 12,000 steps a day when she was in college, commuting to campus and running errands on foot, in addition to the movement she was logging at the gym. Last year, Jennifer invested in a Jawbone UP2. She wore it for a week to get a snapshot of how much activity she was logging, and she realized on an average day she was logging about 9,000 steps. On a weekday, she now aims to get 18,000 steps and tries to get more on the weekend, by going for hikes or long walks. She has lost 15 pounds since using her tracker over the course of 13 months.

Favorite weight-loss feature:The 'Smart Coach' feature gives a seven-day daily average, and Jennifer says that helps motivate her more than a daily goal since she's able to be more active on the weekend. In the first few months of using her tracker, her seven-day daily average increased from about 9,000 steps to almost 18,000 steps.

Rebecca Mott lost 30 pounds about eight years ago without wearing a tracker. But when she started wearing a tracker, roughly two years into her weight loss, she lost another 25 pounds with the help of running and boot camp-style workouts. She credits her tracker for helping her keep the weight off because she's able to keep tabs on her steps and calories burned. Rebecca says she and her husband have a friendly competition to see who can log the most steps each day.

Favorite weight-loss feature: "The hourly reminders to move and hit 250 steps keeps me from sitting at my desk all day," she says. Also, the "stair flights" tracker motivates Rebecca to take the stairs instead of the elevator. "Looking at my 'calories burned' motivates me to do more activity to drive that number up," she says.

Until now, Kate Wilson said she didn't understand all the hype surrounding fitness trackers. Having done two sprint triathlons last summer, she decided she wanted to start training for a full triathlon. As a gift, her boyfriend bought her the TomTom Spark 3 Cardio+Music, a waterproof tracker that tracks her runs as well as her cycling and swimming training sessions. She's now hooked on her fitness tracker. Over the last three months, she's lost eight pounds and gained muscle, she says.

Favorite weight-loss feature:The tracker can store up to 500 songs, which Wilson says pushes her through workouts. The tracker is also less bulky than her iPhone. "The built-in music player is a saving grace for the days that I don't want to work out," says Katie. "I actually play a trick on myself and only let myself listen to my favorite songs when I'm exercising."

Sarah Dawson gained almost 10 pounds in the first year she was waiting tables. She says she was using her employee discount to buy dinner at the restaurant, which usually consisted of something creamy or fried. In January 2019, Sarah made it her New Year's resolution to lose weight. She started meal prepping chicken and veggies and packing dinners to bring into work. She also began wearing the Garmin vívofit 2 tracker to gauge how much of a workout she was getting. She realized she overestimated how much she was walking during her shifts.

Favorite weight-loss feature:The tracker is intuitive in that it learns your activity level and then sets new goals for you each day. "It was like I didn't want to let my tracker down when it set a new goal for me," Dawson says.
