EXCLUSIVE: Michael Kors Talks Beauty Inspiration & His New Makeup Collection
We caught up with the designer backstage before his fall show to ask him about his new Into the Glow collection of gel bronzers, dry shimmer oil and bright polishes and glosses, plus all things beauty.
The new dewy bronzers are such an obvious fit for you and for getting that Kors girl look—how did they come about and what did you really want to get right with them?
When I think of beauty, the first thing I think of is, 'how do you, in an effortless way, get people to look refreshed, glowing and happy, so that you don't really necessarily notice that they did anything but they somehow look great?' And I think sometimes things have too much glimmer and get too obvious. You don't want people to ask what product you used. My reaction is that I just want women to walk into the room and people to ask, 'were you on vacation? Did you take a few days off?' Really, it was finding something that was light, something that didn't go on heavy, the shimmer is there without being metallic and that was kind of the key thing behind it.
How do you personally like to put it on?
Well, you're talking to someone who likes a glowy leg, I like the face, I like the shoulders. Liberally, liberally.
How do you translate the idea behind a collection into a beauty look?
The greatest thing I always remember when we do this is that it's called a fashion show—show is part of it. We're telling a story and it's the models who bring it to life, the music sets a mood and the beauty and the hair is so important and automatically it tells you who the woman is. Sometimes we work against the look of the clothes because I find it's more interesting. Today, it's a very, very natural look. I was laughing and I said to Orlando [Pita] and Dick Page, our hairdresser and makeup artist, I said, 'I love when the models arrive for their fittings and I ask them to pin their hair up and it looks like they were on a moped and they're just a little flushed.' Instead of going and having their eyebrows overly groomed, which I am so tired of, this was all about really going the other way and really having this fabulous natural eyebrow. There's a lot of Dutch models right now and the Dutch models, we were laughing, their lip color is the lip color that we really want on everyone regardless of where they are from in the world and they have this flush and we want a little bit of that winter flush and just this easy kind of feeling of she just jumped off a moped, but she still looks very elegant. A little Carolyn Bessette back in the 90s.
What has been the best part of entering into the beauty business?
I think the greatest thing for me as a designer is if I can make people feel better about themselves—I'm not solving world hunger, I'm not finding the cure for cancer, I'm not stopping war, but can I make people feel better about themselves?— and the most interesting thing about beauty and fragrance is it's the fastest way for someone to change their attitude. The minute you put on a different lipstick, the minute you spray a new fragrance or even change your nail color, you have a new attitude and I love that.
Who are your beauty icons?
Lauren Hutton, certainly Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Katharine Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy, Ali MacGraw, Charlotte Rampling—women who know themselves and that you notice the woman first. But then on the other side if the coin, I love the glamour queens like Elizabeth Taylor, Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé. Those women are so confident and they know themselves so well that they can really play with high glamour, but most women shouldn't attempt it at home—you need to know what you're doing and have that kind of confidence.
What's the best beauty tip you've picked up?
The biggest thing to remember is to decide on one feature. If you're going to have a dramatic eye, go naked on the mouth; if you're going to do a fabulous dramatic lip, go naked on the eye because when you see it all together, it's too much.
